Move Your Money to a Local Bank
806-large

Want to trade your big bank for an institution that really knows how to make change? Millions of people have already switched from their "too big to fail" banks to local banks and credit unions, and many more will continue to do so.

Local banks are wonderful for many reasons: they reinvest in their local economies, often participate in community giving and volunteerism, and really get to know their customers. After I heard about a campaign called Move Your Money, I switched to a local credit union, and I couldn't be happier with my decision. I hope you'll join me!

Ready to make the switch? This handy search tool makes it easy to find a local bank or credit union near you: http://www.bankfox.com/b/move/

1
Go to your new bank and open an account.
2
Switch your direct deposits and automatic payments to your new bank.
3
Update your checking account for any linked online accounts, like credit cards or PayPal.
4
Wait for all checks and other payments to clear at your old bank. You may want to wait 30 days to close your account just to make sure everything has cleared (contact your bank to be sure).
5
Once everything has cleared, call or visit your old bank and close your account. They will cut you a check for your remaining balance, or you can transfer your funds automatically. Congrats, you've moved your money!

December 2, 2011   Amy Contributor says, I've always hated having my money in a big bank, but as someone who has lived on both sides of the country and is often traveling, it's been somewhat necessary. There aren't many banks that have offices in upstate New York, Alaska, Seattle, and whatever country I happen to be in at the moment. However, the recent economic fiasco and all the bail-outs made me reconsider, and then last week I lost my wallet. I decided it was a sign and instead of requesting new copies of my credit cards from my current bank, I went and opened up a new checking account at Seattle Metropolitan Credit Union. Which, by the way, is a partner of Nature Consortium, and they'll donate $20 to us if you specify our org when you open a new checking account! :) I've only been to SMCU a couple times and I already feel like I've been treated way better than I ever was at my old bank! (Not to name names, but it rhymes with Schmank of Schmimerica.)

I'm sorry you lost your wallet, but I'm glad you're enjoying your new credit union. :-) Yes, the travel thing can be tricky, but many places have credit union service centers (http://www.cuswirl.com/) that can be used by members of any CU. Also, check out this info on locating free ATMs (I use the one at 7-11 since it's right next door): http://www.creditunionfacts.com/atmatm.php.

November 18, 2011   Philip Star says, Just made the switch from Bank of America to Seattle Metropolitan Credit Union. I'm so happy that I'm a part of a bank that supports awesome non-profits like Nature Consortium. I'm even happier to have removed my money from a giant, financial conglomerate that is partly responsible for creating the systemic risk that caused the financial collapse and the ongoing debt crisis. Think local, bank local!

That's awesome that you switched to a credit union that supports Nature Consortium!

It's been a great couple of months with my new bank. They've treated me with kindness and dignity and they were very excited that employees from an organization they support chooses to bank with them. So far one of the best decisions I made during the fall has been switching to a small, local bank.
